What is CBT and How Can It Help You?

At Families De Novo, we believe every family and every person deserves to live with more peace, clarity, and freedom from old struggles. One way to start this journey is through something called CBT, or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Introduction: What is CBT?

CBT stands for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It is a type of talk therapy that helps people change the way they think and act. CBT teaches you that your thoughts affect your feelings, and your feelings affect your actions. When you learn to notice your thoughts and change them, you feel better and make healthier choices.
Imagine your thoughts are like the steering wheel of your life. If your thoughts are negative or fearful, you will drive your life in that direction. CBT helps you turn your steering wheel back towards peace, courage, and love.

Key Takeaways:

  1. CBT teaches you that thoughts create feelings, and feelings create actions.
  2. You can learn to change your thoughts to feel better and act better.
  3. CBT is not just talking about problems – it is learning practical skills to improve your life.
  4. It works best when you practice it daily, even outside therapy sessions.
  5. CBT can help you feel calmer, more confident, and in control of your mind and emotions.
  6. Everyone, even kids and teens, can benefit from CBT skills.
  7. Working with a skilled therapist like Felise De Novo can make learning CBT easier and more powerful

How Does CBT Work?

  1. Identify Negative Thoughts
First, CBT helps you notice what you are thinking. For example, you might think, “I always mess up.” This thought makes you feel sad or anxious.
  2. Challenge Those Thoughts
Then, CBT helps you ask, “Is this true? Do I really always mess up?” You will look for proof that your negative thought is not 100% true.
  3. Replace with Better Thoughts
Finally, you will practice thinking a healthier thought, like “Sometimes I make mistakes, but I also do many things well.”

Why is CBT Helpful?

CBT is helpful because it teaches you skills to handle stress, sadness, anger, fear, and worry. Instead of feeling stuck or overwhelmed by your problems, you learn how to change your thinking patterns and find calm solutions.

CBT can help with:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Worry about the future
  • Feeling “not good enough”
  • Anger or frustration
  • Grief and loss
  • Relationship issues

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has many powerful lessons that can help you live a calmer, stronger, and happier life. Here are the most important takeaways you should remember:

1. Thoughts Create Feelings

One of the biggest lessons from CBT is that your thoughts create your feelings. Many people believe that their feelings just happen, or that other people make them feel certain ways. But CBT teaches that it is your thoughts about events or people that create how you feel. For example, if your friend does not text you back, you might think, “They are mad at me,” and then feel anxious. But if you think, “They are probably busy,” you will feel calm. Learning this gives you power over your emotions.

2. You Can Change Your Thoughts

Another key takeaway is that you can change your thoughts. Many of us believe whatever pops into our minds without questioning it. CBT teaches you to stop, notice the thought, and ask, “Is this really true?” Often, our minds tell us negative things that are not true. When you replace a negative thought with a true and helpful one, your feelings and actions improve.

3. Feelings Influence Actions

CBT also shows that your feelings influence what you do. If you feel hopeless, you might stay in bed all day. If you feel confident, you might go for a walk or apply for a job. By changing your thoughts and feelings, you will start to act in healthier ways that move your life forward.

4. Practice is the Key

CBT is not something you do once and expect life to change. Like learning a sport or playing an instrument, CBT skills need daily practice. The more you practice noticing your thoughts, challenging them, and replacing them with better ones, the easier it gets. Soon it will become a natural way of living.

5. CBT Teaches You Skills for Life

The skills you learn in CBT are not just for therapy sessions. They are for your whole life. You can use them when you are at work, with family, with friends, or alone. CBT skills help you handle stress, fear, sadness, anger, and even guilt or shame. They teach you how to live with more peace and clarity.

6. CBT is for Everyone

Many people think therapy is only for those with big problems or mental illness. But CBT is for everyone. Even if you do not have depression or anxiety, CBT can help you think more clearly, solve problems better, and have healthier relationships.

7. Working with a Therapist Makes it Easier

While some people read about CBT and try it alone, it is much more effective with a trained therapist. A therapist like Felise De Novo can guide you, encourage you, and help you see thoughts and patterns you might miss. Therapy is a safe place to practice these skills so you can use them confidently in your daily life.
